Talk of Burnaboy a week back, one thing that would come to people’s mind is himself and Mr Eazi making history as the first Nigerians Scheduled to Perform at the prestigious COACHLEA Music and Art Festival held yearly at the California Polo Club USA, that would make it to the event and perform. I used those lines because, they were not the first to be scheduled to perform at the event. Wizkid was the first. He was scheduled to perform at last year’s edition but he missed it due to VISA issues as we were told.
Burnaboys making history alongside Mr Eazi was not the trend, the trend was his reaction to the way his name appeared on the Coachlea Flier. You can see this in our site. According to a post on his Instagram page @burnaboygram that has been taken down, Burnaboy complained that his name was suppose to be written bold like that of artiste like ARIANA GRANDE, CHIDISH GAMBINO, and TAME IMPALA because he is an African Giant . Many Nigerians reacted and gave their opinions about how they think it doesn’t matter how his name appeared on the Flier, what matters was that he will be making history by performing at the event alongside Mr Eazi as the first Nigerians to perform at the event. Burnaboys response shocked everyone.
“Don’t worry. I know it is a FACT that my own country ‘NIGERIA’ is home to the largest number of backward unprogressive FOOLS. I will still fight for them because they are not mentally advanced enough to fight for themselves. They will Forever have my Genuine undying LOVE. To the few proud young African intellectuals, who will not conform to whatever bullshit they are given, You are the only hope of Africa. God bless you all. “
Trust Nigerians, they did not fail in blasting him and letting him how disappointed they are in him for making such statement against a country where he has the highest fan base that made him the African Giant he claims to be. He took the post down later. This trended until he made history again.
You must be wondering what history he made. He became the first African artiste to take four awards home at the prestigious Soundcity MVP awards held every January since it’s Maiden edition in 2016. The 2018 edition which is its third edition held at the Eko Convention Center Lagos On Saturday 5th of January 2019 saw Burnaboy break the record held by both TEKNO and DAVIDO. TEKNO at the Maiden edition held on December 29th 2016 won three awards with his song ‘PANA’ (Digital artiste of the year, Song of the year, and Listeners choice award). DAVIDO at the January 2018 edition which was the second edition also took home three awards with his hit song ‘IF’ (video of the year, Song of the year, and African Artiste of the year). Burnaboy broke their records by taking home four awards (Listeners choice, Best Male MVP, Song of the year, and African Artiste of the year), all with the song ‘YE’. As extra, Producer of the year category was won by PHANTOM who produced the song ‘YE’.
Burnaboy who was absent from the event, took to his Instagram page @burnaboygram to express his gratitude to the organizers of the event, his fans, and his family and friends that helped him pick up the awards. His message:
“4 awards!!… Humbled and Honoured!! Thank you @soundcityafrica for the constant support! All my fans for always having my back. Shouts to @thenamix and @peedipicasso for showing up on my behalf.
