DAKORE BECOMES THE BEST ACTRESS IN AFRICA
One of the favourite days of the life of every hardworker is the day they receive an accolade as a recognition for the relentless efforts they have been putting into their work. African Movies Academy Award is one award ceremony that has been encouraging and promoting quality in African Movies production since it’s inception in 2004.It has become the biggest movie award show in Africa since then.
African Movies Academy Awards (AMAA) is the biggest movie award show in Africa, no doubt as it selects the best of the best movies in Africa in its various award categories. The 2018 edition which is its 14th edition was held at Kigali Rwanda on Saturday 20th October. It was a night of Nollywood stars as Nigerian movies took fourteen awards home. A category of the award which is the Animation category was named after the late Nollywood animation legend Jubril Malaifa who was brutally murdered some weeks back, as promised by the organizers. Isoken, Crossroad, Potato Potato, Hakkunde, Banana Island Ghost, and A Hotel Called Memory all Nigerian movies won awards in the various categories they were nominated on. ISOKEN won three awards : Best Actress in a leading Role ( Dakore Egbuson Akande), Osigwe Anyiam Osigwe Foundation Award for best Nigerian Film , and AMAA 2018 Achievement in costume design.
Dakore Egbuson Akande ande who missed the award show that named her the best actress in Africa, couldn’t hide her joy as she took to instagram to thank God and the #isokenthemovie team for her success. Her update:
“Oh my goodness, thank you God! I just WON best Actress In a Leading role at the prestigious AMAA awards in Kigali for my role in #isokenthemovie. It can only be God. I am on set so I was unable to attend. Thank you SO MUCH to @amaaawards_ for this honour. I also want to appreciate you for supporting my WORK, I don’t take it for granted. CROSS ROADS won : Best Actor In A Leading Role ( Richard Mofe Damijo) and Best Actor In Supporting Role (Gideon Okeke) . POTATO POTATO : won best actress in supporting role (Joke Silva). BANANA ISLAND GHOST won: Best Comedy. HAKKUNDE won :Best Screenplay, and another big winner is the controversial no dialogue movie, A HOTEL CALLED MEMORY. The movie won AMAA 2018 AWARDS for Achievement in sound, achievement in Sound Track, and Achievement in Editing. Another big winner for the night is the South African Movie : FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLES. The gang violence themed movie directed by Michael Matthews top home five awards making it the biggest single winner of the night. It won the BEST FILM IN AN AFRICAN LANGUAGE, ACHIEVEMENT IN PRODUCTION DESIGN, BEST FEATURE FILM BY A DIRECTOR, ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY, and BEST FILM.
Other winners include: BEST SHORT FILM ( Tikitat Soulima, Morocco), JUBRIL MALAIFA BEST ANIMATION AWARD ( Belly Flop, South Africa), BEST DOCUMENTARY ( Uncertain Future, Burundi), BEST FILM BY AN AFRICAN LIVING ABOUT ( Alexandra, Nigeria/USA), BEST DIASPORA SHORT FILM ( Torment of Love, Guadeloupe), BEST DIASPORA DOCUMENTARY ( Barrows, Freedom Fighters, Barbados), BEST DIASPORA NARRATIVE FEATURE ( Angelica, Puerto Rico), ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKE UP ( Icheke Oku), ACHIEVEMENT IN VISUAL EFFECTS ( Lucky Specials), BEST YOUNG PROMISING ACTRESS ( The Blessed Vista, Les Bienheureus), BEST DIRECTOR ( Frank Rajah Arase, In My Country),
The night was crowned with a beautiful round up performance by Paul Okoye ( Rude boy of Pasquale) thrilling the audience with beautiful rendition of his hit singles back to back.
